The Cost of Silence and the Weight of Hope

Posted on May 8, 2026May 8, 2026 By Katrina Rasbold

I feel hopeful today because of a hard truth I am finally seeing clearly: we are learning the cost of silence.

I’ve been reflecting on a line from Philippa Gregory’s Boleyn Traitor, a novel about Jane Boleyn. As she nears the end of her life, Jane realizes that Katherine Howard is destined for the same fate as those before her. Speaking of the tyranny of Henry VIII, she speculates that they all should have said “no” when the first innocent fell—to the axe or the rope—so that someone would have been there to say “no” for them at the end. It is a chilling reminder: if we do not say “no” now, there will be no one left to say “no” for us later.

The Great Awakening

My broad hope is that the current “license to be vicious” is actually a massive, painful alarm clock. It is forcing those who were once indifferent to realize that we can no longer afford to look away. There is a certain power in this lack of ambiguity; the ridiculous arrogance of this vitriol has left no room for fence-sitting. Because the manifestation of this evil is so prevalent and so loud, everyone is forced to either condone it or denounce it.

I do not believe there are more hateful people in the country now than before, though that realization sent me into an emotional downward spiral in October 2025. I drastically underestimated how many truly awful people are out there. These mindsets have always existed, but they have now been legitimized and vindicated. Years of social suppression created a pressurized explosion of vitriol the moment that behavior was validated. But now, as the results of that explosion plays out in real-time, I believe saner minds will prevail.

Mentorship With Katrina on Patreon

I came to witchcraft as a young seeker with a head full of questions and a heart full of devotion. Four decades later, I’m still learning, still listening, and still helping others find their own way through the mysteries. I write books, teach classes, set lights, and hold space for people who want real-world magic that fits a real-world life.

I’ve been walking an intentional magical path for more than forty years. My practice is rooted in Eclectic Wicca, Appalachian folk magic, and devotional work with the Powers that walk the crossroads. Over the years, that foundation has braided together with my love of storytelling, community building, and practical spiritual care.

I started like many of us do: with questions no one around me seemed to be asking out loud. I studied, listened, watched, and practiced. I learned from elders, from books, from spirit, and from the land itself. Magic, for me, is not about escaping life. It’s about engaging with it more fully—tending to the unseen threads that weave through our griefs, our joys, our choices, and our transformations.

Ten Past Four - A Cozy Paranormal Romance

"A love story forty years in the making! I started writing this in 1986 and I am thrilled to finally see it published." ~ Katrina Rasbold

"Time does not bury the things we loved; it merely grows the grass over them."

Investigative journalist Nora Grant didn't come to Kentucky looking for ghosts.

She came to disappear.

After escaping years of emotional abuse and the sudden loss of her husband, Nora purchases an abandoned Victorian manor in the hills of Dickson, Kentucky, sight unseen. She expects a crumbling refuge where she and her teenage son can quietly rebuild their lives.

Instead, she finds Faith Cottage—an impossibly pristine home that seems to have been waiting for her.

Its original owner has been waiting, too.
