We’ve all done the “dodge.” You’re at a birthday party, a family reunion, or just a backyard barbecue, and the camera comes out. Your stomach does that familiar, frantic flip. You instinctively take a step back, offer to be the one taking the picture, or make a joke about how “you’re not a photo person.” Other times, we make certain that we are the one holding the camera, not facing it.
We tell ourselves we are protecting our dignity. We tell ourselves that, once we reach our “goal,” we will be ready to be seen. But here is the raw, unvarnished truth: We are missing out on our own lives, and it isn’t our size that keeps us away—it’s the shame.
