There are things I expected from getting older. Grey hair. Wrinkles. A certain amount of creaking when I stand up. Bladder leakage. The gradual realization that getting down onto the floor has become a decision requiring both strategic planning and an exit strategy.
I did not expect to lose my ability to type.
This is particularly insulting because I used to be a medical transcriptionist and for the past decade and a half, an author. Typing was not merely something I knew how to do. Typing was something my fingers knew how to do without consulting me. I could listen to an exhausted, slurring doctor with a strong accent who is talking ninety miles an hour while eating dictate a complicated History & Physical report and watch a documentary on Tudor hygiene at the same time.
There was a time when I could listen to an exhausted, slurring, strongly accented doctor who is talking ninety miles an hour and eating while dictating a laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the same time I watch a documentary on Tudor hygiene and mentally plan dinner. My fingers would simply take care of business.
Those fingers have apparently retired.
