Because magic isn’t one thing. You wouldn’t walk into a hardware store and announce, “I need a tool.” Well…you could. But somebody is eventually going to ask whether you’re hanging a picture, unclogging a toilet, or demolishing a wall.

Magic works much the same way.

I am about to turn 65.

I know this because the United States government has been sending me mail.

Lots of mail. And AARP started blowing me up ten years ago.

Apparently, there is a point in every American life when the federal government, insurance companies, healthcare providers, and approximately four thousand organizations I have never heard of simultaneously become extremely concerned about whether I understand Medicare.

For most of my life, birthdays arrived with cake.

Sixty-five arrives with a three-ring binder.

I have a strong working knowledge of stones. I can usually identify what I’m looking at, and I’m familiar with the magical and metaphysical properties traditionally associated with many of them. This does absolutely nothing to prevent the ancient instinct known as Good rock. Must have.

In fact, knowledge may make the situation worse. The process is fairly straightforward: see rock, identify rock, admire rock, pick up rock, turn rock over, examine other side of rock, and show rock to Eric. Eric acknowledges that yes, it is indeed a rock. His assessment is technically correct but fails to appreciate the significance of this particular rock, so we ignore his opinion.

Technically, this means the Moon is still up there doing perfectly respectable Moon things, but we can’t see the illuminated part from where we’re standing.

I appreciate this. I’m right there for it.

There are days when I, too, am doing perfectly respectable things that are not immediately apparent to the casual observer. Likewise, there are days when I look like I’m kicking up a lot of dust, but I’m not doing shit.

I am so close to 65 that I can smell the Medicare Advantage from here. At nearly 65, I have developed considerable sympathy for celestial bodies that prefer not to explain themselves.

Long before we had pretty glass prayer candles, printed Tarot decks, commercially bottled magical oils, or witchy shops filled with every conceivable tool, our ancestors had fire.

They had plants.

They had resins.

And they had smoke.

Across cultures and centuries, people discovered that when certain plants were placed upon fire, something happened that felt like more than combustion. Fragrance filled the room. Smoke curled upward. The atmosphere changed.

Every generation of Pagans seems to have an unofficial fashion icon.

If social media is to be believed, we’re all gliding through forests in flowing black velvet, trailing lace sleeves, silver jewelry, and enough dramatic scarves to supply an off-Broadway production of Macbeth. Somewhere in the background, Stevie Nicks is singing while ravens circle obligingly overhead.

It’s a lovely image.

It just doesn’t happen to resemble most of the Pagans I know.

In real life, our community tends to dress less like Stevie Nicks and a little more like Marla Singer (reference the movie “Fight Club”) wandered through a Renaissance Faire, stopped at the feed store, and made one last run through Costco on the way home.
