The bathrobe was my ritual robe. It’s not like I stopped by the Piggly Wiggly on my way home–in my “bathrobe”–to buy milk and oreos.

The things I talked to that weren’t there were considerably more complicated.

I have to admit, though, that he wasn’t entirely wrong about the talking part. In addition to the obvious talking to Gods, Goddesses, angels, elementals, etc, I also talk to things. I talk to candles while I’m working with them. I talk to my Tarot cards. I talk to plants. I talk to my house. I talk to animals, which is considered perfectly normal right up until you start behaving as though they might have an opinion about the conversation. I have spoken encouragingly to stones, sternly to electronics, affectionately to herbs, and in language inappropriate for Green Egg Magazine to printers.

Even the ones who insist they aren’t.

They knock on wood.

They cross their fingers.

They refuse to tempt fate by saying something is going too well.

They have a particular shirt they wear when their team plays.

They carry something that belonged to a loved one when they need courage.

They make a wish before blowing out birthday candles.

They throw salt over their shoulder.

They say, “Drive safely,” rather than “Goodbye.”

And they’ll do all of this while explaining that they don’t believe in magic.

Of course not.

This is not nothing. Pick up a 27-pound bag of dog food and carry it around for a while if you need confirmation.

I am also at the lowest weight I have been in more than twenty years.

And as far as I can tell, nobody can tell. And that’s OK.

My clothes have noticed. My clothes are, in fact, extremely supportive of my weight-loss journey. Pants that once stayed exactly where I put them have begun requiring negotiation. Shirts hang differently. Things that once skimmed, stretched, or accommodated now have extra fabric with nowhere particularly important to go.

Those aren’t the altars I’m talking about.

I’m talking about the ones that appear when nobody is paying attention.

It begins innocently enough. You find a really good rock, and because we have already established what happens when Pagans encounter really good rocks, the rock comes home with you. You put it on the corner of a bookshelf because that’s as good a place as any.

A few days later, you find a feather.

The feather looks nice next to the rock.

This means nothing, of course.

I did not expect to lose my ability to type.

This is particularly insulting because I used to be a medical transcriptionist and for the past decade and a half, an author. Typing was not merely something I knew how to do. Typing was something my fingers knew how to do without consulting me. I could listen to an exhausted, slurring doctor with a strong accent who is talking ninety miles an hour while eating dictate a complicated History & Physical report and watch a documentary on Tudor hygiene at the same time.

There was a time when I could listen to an exhausted, slurring, strongly accented doctor who is talking ninety miles an hour and eating while dictating a laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the same time I watch a documentary on Tudor hygiene and mentally plan dinner. My fingers would simply take care of business.

Those fingers have apparently retired.

Technically, that can be enough.

People have been lighting candles with prayers and petitions for longer than any of us can trace. A flame in the darkness is one of those symbols humanity seems to understand instinctively.

The person stands there looking vaguely miserable, usually wearing something unflattering, possibly holding up a newspaper so we know nobody has tampered with the evidence. The lighting is terrible. The posture is worse. Apparently, nobody who weighs more than the recommended amount is permitted to smile.

Then comes the After Picture. Better clothes, better lighting, better hair, better posture, possibly a spray tan, and definitely a smile. Ta-da! A worthwhile human being has emerged!

I have a problem with this whole arrangement.
