Chairs, stairs, bathrooms, food, people, and other things I need to know before I RSVP
There was probably a time when someone could invite me somewhere and my primary consideration was whether I wanted to go.
I don’t remember it, but statistically it must have happened, right?
These days, an invitation immediately opens approximately seventeen tabs in my brain’s browser. Where is it? How far away? How long will I be there? How much walking is involved? And what kind of walking are we talking about? Flat, paved walking, or some cheerful person’s definition of “just a short walk” that involves hills, gravel, tree roots, and the possibility of needing to be airlifted out?
Will there be chairs? What kind of chairs? Chairs with arms can be problematic when you’re fat. Chairs without arms can create their own difficulties when you’re 65 and getting back out of one has become less an automatic bodily movement and more of a coordinated launch sequence. Is this one of those events where chairs technically exist, but everyone inexplicably stands around them?
Are there stairs? How many? Is there a railing?
Is food served? This is important.
Where is the bathroom? Also important.
